The economy’s in the toilet—so we’re going to follow it there! Oh $hit! / Das Krapital, from September to January, will engage our third theme of the year by probing the relation between currency and the feelings associated with anality. Rather than focus on rationally assigned registers of value, our interest will be in the pains and pleasures of miserliness, bodily discipline, greed, shame, fecundity, paranoia and other messy associations that contribute to the ways that we handle and refuse to handle money. At a moment when digital technologies and newly developed financial instruments sublimate money into an ever more abstracted and insubstantial entity, we seek to elaborate its more bodily features by turning to look back at the history of local, private, counterfeit, and other “impure” or “improper” currencies and by investigating the feelings around and symbolic representations of coin and paper representations of exchange value.
